College tour guides study their history

NEW guided tours of a 16th Century college building are now being offered to visitors.

Volunteer tour guides have been trained at Newbattle Abbey College in Dalkeith to provide visitors with information about its long history.

The college site dates back to the 12th century, when the building was used as a Cistercian abbey.

Nowadays the building – bequeathed to the people of Scotland by the 11th Marquis of Lothian – is Scotland’s only adult education residential college.

Rae McGhee, heritage development co-ordinator at Newbattle Abbey College, said: “The tour guides are a tight-knit team who are always looking to increase their knowledge and to develop the content of their tour.

“The tour helps to make the visitor experience more enjoyable and memorable, and is not all about dates and historical facts, but is a fascinating journey where the past is brought to life.”
