College plans Sunday treat for visitors

FREE tours are being offered this weekend around Newbattle Abbey College.

Visitors are invited to the building and its grounds on Sunday as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund event.

The college, near Dalkeith, received more than 48,000 from the fund this summer to help protect its historically significant buildings and landscape. A further 50,000 was awarded last year to fund the college's 70th anniversary exhibition.

Heritage officer Rae McGhee said: "We are really looking forward to this open day. It'll be great to welcome people and encourage them to learn more about Scotland's hidden historical gem."

The college continues to run its 70th anniversary exhibition and, last year, the project sparked the interests of many people within the neighbouring community.

The tours run at noon, 1pm, 2pm and 3pm and young visitors will be given the chance to solve the "Abbey Challenge".
