College adds to growth of allotments

A COMMUNITY demonstration allotment is to be set up by Oatridge College in West Lothian.

The college has received support from the National Lottery-funded Awards for All for the project, which will offer free expert tuition to those who want to grow their own fruit and veg.

Ann Burns, who is heading the project, said: "A lot of people are coming to realise the benefits of having an allotment. The physical activity is really good for you and is a real stress buster as well.

"You are getting fresh fruit and vegetables, grown locally, as part of a healthy diet and you're saving money on your food bills."

The 11-by-32-metre plot will include a greenhouse, shed and fencing, and the project will offer classes such as allotment design, and masterclasses for allotment societies.
