The news that the cost of staying warm in cold weather will continue its inexorable rise should come as no surprise to anyone. Various individuals say that the government has to take radical action to ensure that energy bills are simple and more fair.
The energy companies display typical complacence, blame the cold weather for the increases and carry on increasing prices (and profits) regardless.
The truth is that radical government action is needed and this has to either take the form of direct subsidies to those least able to pay, or bring the energy companies back under public ownership and run for the benefit of the consumers and not the greed of shareholders.
The alternatives are families that are permanently energy-poor or pensioners who have to choose whether to feed themselves or keep warm. This is unacceptable in a culture and society that claims to be caring.
