Cocaine campaign comes to Aberdeen

REVELLERS in Aberdeen were targeted this weekend in a major push to warn of the dangers of cocaine. A total of 38 pubs and clubs in the city took part in the Scottish government campaign.

The Cocaine Awareness Weekends (CAWs) are aimed at highlighting the risk of heart attacks and strokes. The initiative directly targets those aged between 18 and 26, and is in the run-up to what is said to be the main temptation of the festive season.

Community safety minister Fergus Ewing said: "Many young people are not aware of the risks involved in cocaine use and the Scottish Government want to ensure they have all the facts by providing clear information in pubs, clubs and student unions.

"It is essential that people are aware of the very real dangers of using cocaine including the greater risk of heart attacks and its link with strokes. By informing them, this campaign can help Scots enjoy their festive season in safety."

Fraser Hoggan, health improvement officer with the Aberdeen Alcohol and Drug Partnership, said: "Young people aren't aware of the risks involved in cocaine use, but by giving them the information they need in the very places it is most used – in pubs and clubs – they will become more aware of the dangers."

Amanda Christie, manager of Aberdeen's Snafu – which is taking part – said: "It is important for people to be aware of the dangers of taking cocaine, but it is equally important for pubs and clubs to stay vigilant at all times. We have been working in partnership with the Scottish Government with the aim of making Aberdeen a safe place to socialise. We hope we can help make a difference through this initiative."

Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee and Perth have already taken part in the campaign.
