Coastguard centres closed

A SECOND pay strike by coastguard workers closed almost half Britain's rescue co-ordination centres yesterday and left the rest staffed by managers, according to union leaders.

The Public and Commercial Services Union said hundreds of its members at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency walked out for 24 hours from 7am in protest at pay levels said to be "way below" other emergency services.

In Scotland, staff formed picket lines outside the centres, including Stornoway, Forth, Clyde and Aberdeen, where local union official Steve Quinn said: "We have had no meaningful discussions with management since last month's action."

The SNP's Westminster transport spokesman, Angus MacNeil, said: "Most people will be shocked that these dedicated staff, who are involved in co-ordinating some of the most dangerous rescues at sea, are not being remunerated properly."
