‘Hungry’ Alloa confirm title-winning pedigree

Third Division Champions Alloa Athletic returned to form with a 3-1 win over Stranraer.

The Wasps took the lead on 13 minutes when Ryan McCord converted a Robbie Winters cutback, but the Blues levelled 12 minutes later through Grant Gallagher.

Winters then slotted home before half-time and McCord ensured the win for Paul Hartley’s side in the second half.

Hartley said, “This game again just shows how good a team we are and proves that we are still hungry even though we have won the league.”

Stair Park boss Keith Knox said, “We gifted goals but I will stick to looking at the bigger picture, which is the play-offs.”

The Blues will face Queen’s Park in the play-offs after the Spiders booked their place and moved into second place with a 2-0 win over Annan. Jamie Longworth opened the scoring in the first half and Ian Watt sealed the win.

The defeat did not end Annan’s play-off hopes as Elgin drew 3-3 at Berwick and sit three points clear of the Galabankies. They came back from 3-1 down to make the Borderers’ thin play-off hopes even thinner.

Kevin McDonald, Jordan Forster and Stuart Noble were on target for Berwick. Mark Durnan, Jason Crooks and Craig Gunn responded for Elgin, and Berwick’s Andy McLean was dismissed three minutes from time.

Peterhead’s late charge for a play-off place looks to be over after they were held 1-1 by Clyde, for whom Declan Gallacher scored in the last minute to cancel out an own goal by team-mate Ian Gray.

Montrose came from behind to defeat East Stirling, who led through Kevin Turner, before Martin Boyle, Gary Wood and Boyle again secured the points.
