BBC SCOTTISH SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA: MAESTROS' CHOICE ***** CITY HALLS, GLASGOW
THERE were still more than a few empty seats at the City Halls for this show, which, given the remarkable programme and playing on offer, was a shame for both the musicians and those who missed them. Fortunately, the crowd made its presence felt, providing the loud and prolonged applause the night deserved.
It was the BBC SSO who premiered James MacMillan's remarkable work, The Confessions of Isobel Gowdie back in 1990, and almost 20 years on it still sounds brand new. Inspired by the true-life story of a Nairn woman accused of witchcraft and executed, the piece doesn't make for comfortable listening. It is, however, utterly compelling. From the subtlest of openings, suggestive of Gowdie's pre-trial peacefulness, the work steadily builds towards menacing violence. That such beautifully measured playing can give way to an adrenaline-inducing crescendo is testament to the skill of this wonderful orchestra.
Sandwiched as it was between the MacMillan and Ravel's powerful masterpiece, Daphnis et Chlo, Mozart's Piano Concerto No. 25 almost felt underwhelming. However, the nimble, delicate and effortless playing of hugely talented pianist, Shai Wosner ensured its place in the game.
Good ballet music should stand up without a sea of pointe shoes to carry it – and Daphnis et Chlo is more than capable of holding its own. Hearing the tidal wave of sound created by an 85-piece orchestra and the 82-strong Edinburgh Festival Chorus is an engaging and memorable experience – and that, more than anything, is why every seat in the City Halls should have been filled.
