City's Harvey Nicks bags world shops top ten slot

THE £11 million Harvey Nichols outlet in St Andrew Square has been named one of the world’s ten best shops.

The store joins London’s Harrods, Selfridges, Fortnum & Mason and Mitsukoshi in Tokyo on the list compiled by Retail Week.

Samantha Lyster, who put the guide together, said the shop’s cityscape views made it "an outstanding leisure experience".

"Harvey Nichols in London has a great reputation, but the Edinburgh store tops it as a location," she added. "The fabulous clothes are matched by superb views of a beautiful city, making shopping there a great leisure experience."

Harvey Nichols spokesman Richard Gray said:

"Retail Week is regarded as an industry bible so it is great to know that we keep the same company as such places as Mitsukoshi in Tokyo.

"The decision to open in Edinburgh was based on what a fabulous piece of architecture we could use in St Andrew Square, with unique views of Edinburgh Castle on the one side and the Firth of Forth on the other."

Elinor Jayne, a spokeswoman for the Scottish Retail Consortium, added: "This is good news for Scottish retail as it raises the profile of our shops in the international tourism market.

"It will be welcomed by other retailers already operating in Edinburgh, as well as help attract new stores to the Scottish Capital."
