City to offer writers refuge
EDINBURGH is set to become a safe haven for writers fleeing persecution in their own countries.
City leaders are considering plans to make the Capital Scotland's first "City of Refuge" to offer sanctuary for one author or journalist at a time who is unable to live and work safely in his or her country of birth.
A writer such as Turkish journalist Rajip Zarakolou, who has had his offices firebombed and has been jailed for his articles about social justice, could spend up to two years in Edinburgh, the world's first Unesco City of Literature.
If the scheme is given the go-ahead by the council's executive, chosen writers (and their families) will be funded to live in the Capital where they can write - and also be involved in community events.
