City's surgical know-how boosts India

A COURSE for doctors in India run by the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh is celebrating after educating its 1000th trainee.

The project started 11 years ago and attracts medics from across south Asia, some travelling hundreds of miles to attend.

Pradip Datta, one of those from the RCSE involved in the training, said it has made an enormous difference to the standard of medical care in India.

He said: "The enthusiasm of these young surgical trainees is staggering. They would not think twice about doing a 36-hour train journey to attend.

"The average trainee spends anything up to three months of their salary to attend the course – an amazing commitment. One can only feel intensely humbled by such unbridled enthusiasm."
