City park flies Green Flag after winning new award

A CITY park has become one of the first in Scotland to win a prestigious Green Flag award.

Pupils from South Morningside Primary School joined the Friends of Braidburn Valley Park to unfurl the green flag.

The park was given the award with Harrison Park. The scheme aims to encourage safe, clean and accessible public parks which are managed in an environmentally sustainable way.

The award is the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales, and is being piloted in Scotland this year.

Paths and signs have been upgraded at Braidburn, while volunteers have planted wildflower meadows, trees and bulbs.

The Friends groups has also just been awarded a Parks and Gardens Community grant to create a permanent orienteering course in the park, and a Neighbourhood Partnership grant to create a website.

Robert Aldridge, the city's environment leader, said: "Hoisting the Green Flag celebrates Edinburgh's commitment to high quality parks as well as the hard work of those who keep our green spaces beautiful."
