Spokesman Klaus Stoehlker said that the suspended Fifa president expects to leave hospital next Monday. It is understood he suffered what has been called “a nervous shock” but is expected to make a full recovery.

Mr Stoehlker said Blatter “will be back officially in business on Tuesday next week”.

Last Friday, Blatter’s American lawyer said that the 79-year-old Swiss was at a hospital for stress issues. Yesterday, long-time Blatter aide Walter Gagg said “he was always at the hospital”.

Blatter and Uefa president Michel Platini were given 90-day bans by Fifa’s ethics committee in the wake of a Swiss criminal case investigating financial misconduct at the governing body.

The criminal case centres on whether Blatter misused Fifa money by making a £1.35m payment to Frenchman Platini for consultation work.

They both deny any wrongdoing.
