Church set to honour Leith's unsung heroes
A CHURCH is to launch a community awards scheme.
Officials at South Leith Parish Church decided to press on with the initiative in a bid to galvanise the community as well as recognise people who, up until now, have played an important and understated role.
The awards programme, which will have its first presentations in January, will see gold, silver and bronze medals given out in six different fields across Leith.
Church minister Rev Ian Gilmour said: "This will be an opportunity for Leithers to honour anyone that they know has served the community over the years.
"We want to recognise the outstanding contributions that have been made by Leithers, both locally and in some cases nationally and internationally."
Voting slips can be collected from the church itself and should be returned before September 1.
It is anticipated that the awards will be made amid a gala day celebration on January 21.
