Church concerns over slot-machine prizes
THE Moderator of the Church of Scotland has joined calls opposing a UK government plan to liberalise laws on fruit machines.
The Rev David Lunan, along with eight other Church leaders, has written a letter opposing plans to double the maximum winnings from 35 to 70. They have also raised concerns about plans to increase the maximum amount a child can win to 50.
"With Britain in the midst of a recession, this irresponsible relaxation of the rules, aided and abetted by the government, risks exploiting low-income earners and vulnerable people, as well as tearing down precautionary safeguards against problem gambling," he said.
"Research shows that slot machines can be highly addictive and higher prizes increase the risk of people chasing losses."
