Child benefit at a glance
A TOTAL of 7.8 million families in the UK receive child benefit, with £20.30 a week for the eldest child, and £13.40 for every other child.
Families can carry on claiming up until their children reach the age of 16, or 19 if they are in full-time education.
Under George Osborne's reforms, households which contain at least one higher rate taxpayer will no longer be able to claim any child benefit. The higher rate tax threshold begins at 43,875.
The benefit will continue for now and will not be axed until April 2013. There are no plans by the government to restore the benefit to all families if the public finances are repaired. The measure will save an approximate 1 billion a year.
