MSP steps up rights battle for children of prisoners

AN SNP MSP is to take her campaign for improving the rights of children of prisoners to the UN next year.

Aileen Campbell, MSP for the South of Scotland, has co-sponsored a successful proposal for the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child to hold a Day of General Discussion on the impact imprisonment has on dependent children.

She said: "Children should not be made to suffer for the sins of their mother or father. Unfortunately, this is what is happening to thousands of children in Scotland - and many more across the globe.

"When a parent is imprisoned, their child becomes more likely to suffer material hardships, social exclusion, emotional trauma and is more likely to embark on a life of crime themselves. We must ensure the interests of children have a place in our justice system."
