Challenge to 'bonus culture'

EXECUTIVES at Scottish Water were challenged yesterday to defend a "bonus culture".

MSPs will write to the public body in response to a petition at Holyrood, which urged the Scottish Government to end the practice. Five Scottish Water executives received "incentives" totalling 333,000 in 2008-9 as part of a 1.1 million wages bill.

Bill Butler MSP said the public "cannot fathom" the payments.

The public petitions committee agreed to take forward the suggestion, lodged in the name of Drew Cochrane, and call on ministers to stop bonus payments to senior executives.

Executive members' pay is made up of basic salary, performance awards, benefits and pensions contributions. The potential maximum annual incentives attainable are 40 per cent of base salary and are not pensionable.
