Cervical cancer jab promoted
SCHOOL girls and their families have been urged to take up a vaccine against the main cause of cervical cancer.
NHS Lothian is currently preparing for its second year of the programme and is hoping to boost participation in the HPV jab.
Around 10,000 girls accepted the offer last year, and it is hoped it will make a long-term impact on rates of the disease – of which 70 per cent are caused by this virus.
Immunisation co-ordinator Dr Sarah De Martin said: "The uptake last year in the Lothians was ahead of the average and we are hopeful we will see higher this year."
