Ceremony for battle's 360th anniversary

A SOMBRE ceremony has been held to mark the 360th anniversary of the Battle of Dunbar.

Community councillors, local historians and a member of a re-enactment group the Sealed Knot - clad in full battle dress from the period - turned out to remember the battle in which the Scottish Army was defeated by Oliver Cromwell.

Olivier Hofer of the Sealed Knot laid a wreath at a memorial stone at Broxmouth near Dunbar.

The 1650 battle was fought between English Parliamentarian forces under Cromwell and a Scottish army commanded by David Leslie which was loyal to King Charles II of England, who had been proclaimed King of Scotland a year earlier.

After the battle Cromwell marched unopposed to Edinburgh which he quickly captured.

Plans are in the offing to mount an information board detailing the battle and the aftermath in the coming months.
