Sports stars, politicians, musicians and actors took to the internet last night to show their appreciation for Andy Murray.

Midge Ure, singer: “Andy Murray, still a champion.”

Rory Bremner, comedian: “Well done. Brave Brilliant, gracious. Tried you’re heart out. NO shame losing to 7 time champ.”

First Minister Alex Salmond: “A fantastic performance. All of the people of Scotland can take pride and be inspired by Andy Murray.”

Eddie Izzard, comedian: “Very sorry to hear that Andy Murray didn’t win Wimbledon today but I salute the fighter that he is.”

Tony Parsons, writer: “Andy Murray – lost a match and won the heart of a nation.”

Russell Crowe, actor and producer: “Federer, all hail, 7th Wimbledon championship. Andy Murray, you are a champion, one day mate it will be you.”

Joey Barton, footballer: “Murray unlucky there. Tried his best. Just ran into a tennis legend. Showed afterwards how much it meant to him, didn’t half feel for him.”
