Police are investigating Twitter threats made to Raman Bhardwaj

POLICE have launched an investigation after Scottish Television sports presenter received a threat on social network Twitter.

The STV reporter was targeted for abuse by some Rangers fans when a Tweet sent on Sunday evening was though to accuse supporters of the Ibrox

club, who were posting in support of ex-England captain John Terry, of being racist.

The 37-year-old had been debating with his 28,000 followers about the Chelsea defender’s FA hearing over racism allegations.

He Tweeted: “ Rangers fans - and only Rangers fans on my timeline - are so quick to defend John Terry. Jeez. I wonder why.”

One Twitter user replied:

“I dnt understand what your saying here Raman. Could you explain? Are you saying we are racist?”

The sports presenter immediately responding to deny the allegation but was targeted with a number of abusive Tweets.

An STV spokesperson said: “We can confirm that Raman Bhardwaj was subjected to threatening comments via social media.

“The matter has been reported to the police.

“As investigations are ongoing, we have no further comment and Raman will not be posting on social media sites in the interim.”

A spokesperson for Strathclyde police confirmed that the incident had been reported.
