MUSICIAN Sir Elton John and his long-term partner David Furnish were officially married yesterday – with their two young sons as ring bearers.

The ceremony came exactly nine years after the pair tied the knot in a civil partnership.

The veteran performer married his partner of more than 20 years at their Windsor estate with a number of stars attending the celebrations, including Elizabeth Hurley, the Beckhams and actor Hugh Grant.

In a sign of the times, Sir Elton shunned lucrative magazine deals to post wedding day updates on social media, including a photo on Instagram of himself, pen in hand, sitting next to Mr Furnish at a desk, with a piece of paper in front of them, and the caption: “That’s the legal bit done. Now on to the ceremony! #ShareTheLove @DavidFurnish”

Sir Elton posted snaps on the photo-sharing website, throughout the day including an image of a wedding invitation emblazoned with red roses which confirmed the wedding date of 21 December.

He later shared another photo with the caption: “It’s beginning!! The Registrar welcomes our guests. #ShareTheLove”

It showed a room full of at least 40 guests with Sir Elton and Mr Furnish sitting at the front.

The star also posted a photograph of two pairs of shoes sitting at a fire, and wrote: “Our little ring bearers are fast asleep and their shoes are polished and ready for tomorrow’s celebration. @DavidFurnish #ShareTheLove”

The famous couple have two sons Zachary, three, and one-year-old Elijah.

On 21 December 2005, they tied the knot in a civil partnership ceremony at the Windsor Guildhall, and a galaxy of stars joined the celebrations that day, including Victoria Beckham, Helena Bonham Carter and Sir Michael Caine.

That service took place in the same venue where the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall got married.

The pair first met in 1993 when a mutual friend invited British Canadian film-maker Mr Furnish to dinner with the rock legend.

With Mr Furnish by his side, Sir Elton has hosted star-studded bashes and raised huge sums for the Elton John Aids Foundation.

Gay marriages became possible in England and Wales for the first time in March. Prime Minister David Cameron hailed the introduction as a “historic day” as many leapt at the chance to tie the knot.

Same-sex couples will be able to get married in Scotland from 31 December,

In an interview for US TV in March this year, Sir Elton said: “We’ll do it very quietly. But we will do it and it will be a joyous occasion and we will have our children.”

He added: “For this legislation to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn’t just say ‘Oh, well, we have a civil partnership, we’re not going to bother to get married’. We will get married.”

And during the interview for NBC’s Today programme, Mr Furnish said of the anticipation from their circle of friends: “The phone’s been ringing off the hook.”

Brooklyn Beckham, eldest son of David and Victoria, has posted a photograph of the wedding lunch menu on Instagram.

Wild mushroom soup and truffle cream is for starter, while beef short rib and caramelised onion pie with roasted potatoes and parsnips in horseradish butter is the main dish.

Warm chocolate pudding and vanilla ice cream is for dessert, with wedding cake to follow, while guests will also be served Laurent-Perrier champagne.

Brooklyn captioned the photo: “Congratulations Uncle Elton and Uncle David #ShareTheLove”

The teenager posted a photograph of name cards which included his whole family – David, Victoria, Romeo, Cruz, Harper and himself.

He also posted a photograph of his mother with her arm around him.

He wrote: “Amazing day with family and special friends congratulations Uncle Elton and Uncle David #ShareTheLove”.
