I DIDN’T make the cut (as expected!) but I just had a fabulous time as always. Every time I come here and spend a week in Scotland to play these three magnificent courses, it is the highlight of my year, especially today playing Kingsbarns in this California-like weather.

I have seen this golf course in just about every kind of weather Scotland can throw at you – wind, rain, cold or sunshine - but today was absolutely glorious and it just made the finishing day magnificent.

For me Kingsbarns is the most beautiful and dramatic course. While Carnoustie offers such challenges to test anyone’s skills and the Old Course is so historic, where you can see the ghosts of thousands of golfers walking down the fairways with you, for sheer beauty Kingsbarns is my favourite.

On today’s round my pro partner, Mike Miller, and I were trying very hard to break into double digits and finally on the last hole here I managed to make a putt on a par five and we wound up at 10 under. So we were just happy in the end to get into double digits.

Mike played magnificently. He strikes the ball so far, has great control and today seemed to be his best day on these greens which have a great roll to them. I see a lot of great golf in his future and I would expect to consistently see his name in the top ten leader boards in the US in the next few years.

This week in Scotland is always my best of the year. I get to see people I know from all over the world – South Africa, the UK, America – that I’ve met here over the years here and enjoy great golf and hospitality. How wonderful is it to walk out of your hotel and see Luke Donald, Vijay Singh, Lee Westwood and other great golfers of the world. I have played in all the pro-ams you can imagine throughout the world and this is by far the best with the highest quality golf and the highest quality courses.

Don Felder biography

Member of American rock band The Eagles from 1974 to 2001. Felder wrote the music for Hotel California, now a classic. He began playing golf when he was on the road in 1978 and now plays at Malibu golf club in Los Angeles. This is his seventh appearance in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Says his greatest moment in golf was playing in the fourball in 2003 when Lee Westwood made his memorable albatross two at the par five 9th hole at Kingsbarns and went on to win the Championship. Other interests include skiing and big game fishing.
