Catalonia 'is not a nation'

SPAIN'S highest court yesterday ruled that the constitution recognised Spain as the country's only nation, a blow to efforts by the north-eastern region of Catalonia to assume that status.

The constitutional court said that referring to the region around Barcelona as a nation is "a perfectly legitimate idea" but has no legal basis.

The ruling came a day before a planned protest in Barcelona with the slogan "We decide, we are a nation." It refers to articles of a 2006 charter granting Catalonia new powers but which Spain's conservative opposition Popular Party says undermines the idea of a unified Spain.
