The pair met in the 2012 Australian Open where the British No 1 was victorious after Kukushkin had to retire at one game and two sets down in the third set.

Murray will be heavily favoured to progress but his route to the final is full of potential pitfalls.

In fact, it’s not too unlikely that a route of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer will have to be navigated just to get to the final.

Once there, Murray could once against face long-time foe Novak Djokovic.

The two have met in grand slam finals on five occasions. Djokovic won all three in Australia, though Murray emerged victorious from their battles at Wimbledon and the US Open.
