AN elderly care service has been named as the preferred bidder to use a prominent community space in Niddrie.

Caring in Craigmillar, which aims to combat loneliness and isolation amongst older and socially disadvantaged residents, has been given the nod to manage the building on Niddrie Mains Terrace.

The decision was approved by the city’s finance and budget committee on Thursday.

A lease for up to five years still needs to be signed.

The building’s ground floor will be given over to Caring in Craigmillar, with the upper levels to be used as council
offices.

Religious network The Redeemed Christian Church of God also put in a bid to take control of the community space, but the pitch was
unsuccessful.

The two bids were judged by a four-person panel.

The submission by Caring in Craigmillar included more formal arrangements to deal with access out of normal hours rather than relying on the goodwill of volunteers.

The key addition contributed towards the health agency being selected as the preferred bidder.
