Care group is criticised over money trouble

FINANCIAL experts have criticised the management of a Craigmillar childcare organisation that is trying to find additional funding to stay open.

The city council is set to make a decision soon on whether to award Craigmillar Childcare Services (CCS) a grant, believed to be about 43,000.

The money is needed to pay staff and creditors and keep five nurseries, after-school clubs and youth projects open.

One of the prerequisites of the body being awarded the money was providing a business plan to show it will not accumulate huge debts in future years.

Council experts are now reviewing the business plan and are expected to make an announcement in the next week.

However, a leaked copy has revealed CCS sought advice from the Walker Partnership, financial consultants, which it then included in its final report.

The consultants highlighted 15 examples, such as a failure properly to monitor petty cash, and no effective debt collection policies.
