Capital charity delivers aid to Gaza
CAPITAL-BASED relief organisation Mercy Corps has travelled to the Middle East to deliver aid to those caught up in fighting between Israel and Palestinian governors Hamas.
Blankets have already been handed out to dozens of families and additional food was due to be delivered to 1800 people in the region this week.
The charity is waiting to send the food into Gaza via the Kerem Shalaom border to be handed to the elderly, injured or those with young children.
Mercy Corps' programme manager for the Gaza Strip, who lives in Gaza City, Isdud Najjar, said: "The humanitarian situation is the worst I've ever seen. People are afraid to go out on the streets. This is particularly difficult for the poor and those who rely on outside food assistance – up to 80 per cent of the population.
"They simply cannot get the supplies they need."
Mervyn Lee, the organisation's executive director in Edinburgh, added: "This violence is having a devastating impact on the Gaza population."
