Canoeist who drowned after kayak overturned is named

THE canoeist who died at the weekend when his kayak overturned in the sea off the coast of Angus was yesterday named as Philip Low, 47, from Kirriemuir.

Mr Low's body was recovered from Lunan Bay, near Montrose, on Saturday by the Montrose lifeboat crew. He and another canoeist had got into difficulties when their kayaks capsized.

Bob Abercrombie, the watch manager at Forth Coastguard, said: "It seems to have been a tragic accident, possibly related to the tremendous swell in the area which has been caused by strong easterly winds and seas over a protracted period of time."

Tayside Police have appealed for anyone who was at Lunan Bay on Saturday afternoon and who may have witnessed the incident to contact the force.

A spokesman for the force said: "Police would also like to speak with an Eastern European couple who allowed their mobile telephone to be used to contact the emergency services."
