Cancer survival hope after gene discovery

A GENE which triggers an aggressive cancer of the nervous system that mainly affects children under five has been identified by scientists. It is hoped the breakthrough will provide a genetic test and possible treatments for neuroblastoma, which accounts for 15 per cent of childhood cancer deaths.

Neuroblastoma, which strikes the peripheral nervous system, has a survival rate of less than 40 per cent. It was predicted more than 30 years ago that there was a genetic element to the disease.
