Cancer test developer wins US award
A PIONEERING scientist who revolutionised cancer services has won a prestigious award for her work.
Dr Catharine Sturgeon, a consultant clinical scientist at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, developed one of the first diagnostic tests for cancer used in the UK. She received the Morton K Schwartz Award from the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) for her contribution to cancer research.
Her check, first used in the 1970s, is most often used to help patients with bowel cancer. It involves using tumour markers – substances found in the blood, urine and body tissues that can increase when a tumour is present – to help detect the presence of cancer.
Dr Sturgeon, from Dalkeith, Midlothian, said she was "delighted" with the award.
