Camera links deaf people to health help

A WEB cam project enabling deaf people to access NHS 24 is to be launched later this month.

It is one of two pilot schemes being run by the organisation which will be inspected by health secretary Nicola Sturgeon today.

The scheme will see those who use sign language as a way of communication have special access to the Breathing Space resource, which offers help with depression.

Recent studies in the Lothians have shown that the mental health of deaf people can sometimes be forgotten as medics strive to deal with physical shortcomings.

Ms Sturgeon said: "The new BSL service is an example of NHS 24 adopting an innovative approach to ensure that they can offer a wider range of services."
