Call for end of monarch's Scots Presbyterian promise
THE 300-year-old promise made by monarchs to uphold Presbyterianism in Scotland should be dropped when Prince Charles succeeds to the throne, the National Secular Society has said.
Norman Bonney, the society's council member for Scotland, claimed the pledge helped fuel sectarianism. He said the monarchy in Scotland should cease to be "uniquely protestant" and called for the special relationship between the monarchy and the Church of Scotland to end. The society has written to Scottish MPs, the Moderator of the Church of Scotland's General Assembly, the Scottish Secretary and the Prime Minister, setting out its arguments.
Mr Bonney said: "One of the first acts of a new monarch, according to the 1707 Act of Union, is to swear to uphold Protestantism and Presbyterianism in Scotland.
"Such a measure is unnecessary in contemporary Scotland and can only contribute to continuing sectarian divisions."
