Call to veto drink ban for under-21s

STUDENT leaders have issued a plea to MSPs to overturn plans for a ban on off-licences selling alcohol to under-21s.

The call came as Holyrood's health and sport committee prepared to vote on the next round of proposed changes to the Scottish Government's Alcohol Bill, drawn up to tackle the country's relationship with drink.

If passed, it would give local licensing boards the ability to raise the minimum age for off-sales to 21. MSPs have previously voted against a blanket ban.

Liam Burns, president of the National Union of Students in Scotland, said: "It seems totally wrong that someone could vote, pay taxes and bring up a family but not buy alcohol for their own home.

"The proposals are wrong but they're also entirely unworkable. Imagine each local area in Scotland having a different age for buying off-sale alcohol.

"It would be chaos. Worse still, the local changes could be made without any consultation, which is surely entirely undemocratic."
