Call for independent inquiry into Lockerbie bomber's conviction

Campaigners handed a petition to MSPs yesterday demanding an independent inquiry into the conviction of Lockerbie bomber Abdelbaset Ali Mohmed al-Megrahi.

Dr Jim Swire, whose daughter Flora was killed in the 1988 atrocity, led the delegation to Holyrood, where the campaigners met members of the Scottish Parliament's public petitions committee.

The campaigners, who say more than 1,500 people have backed their e-petition, believe Megrahi was the victim of a miscarriage of justice and is not guilty based on the evidence led by prosecutors.

The leader of the Catholic Church, Cardinal Keith O'Brien, joined Dr Swire at the Scottish Parliament yesterday.

Cardinal O'Brien said that without such an independent inquiry the "web of mystery" surrounding the "horrible" bombing may never be resolved.

He said: "We're living in the 21st century now and really it shouldn't be beyond us, it shouldn't be beyond the Scottish Government, to take this on."
