Inveraray make history with comeback cup win

BROTHERS Graeme and Garry Macpherson were celebrating a piece of history last night as Inveraray defeated Kyles 3-2 to lift the 106th Glasgow Celtic Society Cup.

Striker Garry's hat-trick at Old Anniesland saw the holders come back from 2-0 down to triumph. It also set a new record, with the goal-scoring hero and his goal-keeping sibling claiming their 12th winner's medal, one more than Kyles' Kerr Crawford.

Kyles started like the young bucks they are, never letting Inveraray establish a rhythm. It was frenetic stuff and the Tighnabruaich side's opener typified the opening period.

Chris Crawford found a bobbling ball hard to control and when the ball bounced up, Colin MacColl was on it to flash the ball into the net.

Kyles moved further ahead in 36 minutes, Thomas Whyte finishing off some neat play.

Inveraray changed things and salvaged their half, and the final. In 37 minutes, Garry Macpherson latched on to a loose ball to batter home before equalising direct from a free hit.

He netted his hat-trick just after the break. Russell MacKinlay was felled in the box and Macpherson pocketed the penalty and place in the annals.
