Burns family heirlooms rediscovered

A PORTRAIT of Robert Burns's son is among a cache of Burns family heirlooms rediscovered after 70 years, the National Trust for Scotland said yesterday.

The painting, a letter and other items were found in boxes discovered in the eaves of the Burns Cottage Museum in Alloway, Ayrshire.

The relics were sold to the museum in the 1930s by the Bard's great-granddaughter. They were found as renovation work is carried out by the NTS.

Curators said they will provide new insight into the poet's family when they go on display at the Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, set to open next year.

The portrait is of James Glencairn Burns, the poet's eighth son, one of only three sons to survive into adulthood.
