Bullying claim in gardens row

A POLICE investigation has been launched into allegations that leading figures behind the transformation of Aberdeen’s Union Terrace Gardens have been the victims of internet abuse, intimidation and e-mail hacking.

The plans by the Aberdeen City Garden Trust to turn the Victorian gardens into a futuristic parkland called the Granite Web has already left the city bitterly divided in the run-up to next month’s crucial referendum vote.

But it has now emerged that senior figures behind the £140 million scheme, including Tom Smith, chairman of the local economic forum, have called in Grampian Police to investigate claims that they have been subject to online bullying, personal attacks and intimidation by opponents of the project.

Adding only that police would be well advised to consider whether they are being used as political puppets by vested, powerful Aberdeen and Edinburgh interests with a keen awareness of the power of cybercommenting on matters in the public domain. Today, Friday, sees the Scottish press and broadcast media headlines appearing to suggest that the voting is 'rigged'. Does this mean that ACSEF know they will lose, and they are lining up to get certain councillors to argue for ignoring the referendum result?

I just wonder how people are so easily intimidated, does no one up there have any backbone?

Here we are in New Alba where freedom of speech is suppressed, opinions are one sided unless of course you are the First Minister who can make public statements about this project advising the populace to accept the proposed plans. Not his first foray into sticking his nose into issues that did not politically concern him. Let us not forget the Trump golf course saga

Most newspapers eliminate comments of an offensive or abusive nature and perhaps ban the offender from further submissions. Eliminating the ability for readers to comment at all is something I haven't seen before. I wonder if it will be reinstated after the referendum.

Having seen the material that got the comments on the P&J shut down and referred to the police unrevel in real time, I can see how the originator of the purient and wholly irrelevant allegations does deserve to be shown the error of their ways. However I hope the police are also investigating the veracity of information presented as "fact" by ASCEF and other project supporters. This goes far beyond incompetence and IMO borders on outright fraud.

The whole things a bit one sided. ACCACSEF spends £600k promoting it but nobody can speak against it. The local newspaper has stopped allowing comments on their website. There's been an attempt to silence all criticism.
