Bully banished
IN the United States, because of the actions of property developers such as Donald Trump, some states have recently enacted or are in the process of enacting legislation that limits the power of compulsory purchase where private individuals or companies will be the sole beneficiaries.
Nationally, in 2006 President George Bush issued an executive order which stated that the taking of private property by "eminent domain" – the US term for compulsory purchase – should be "for public use, with just compensation, and for the purpose of benefiting the general public and not merely for the purpose of advancing the economic interest of private parties". No longer able to be a bully in his own playground, Mr Trump should not be allowed to behave like one in Scotland.
