Labour yesterday claimed the support of leading figures from the construction industry for its plan to help 2,000 first-time buyers who have small deposits.

Barratt Homes regional manager Douglas McLeod said the scheme will provide the required financial support to first-time buyers to enable them to obtain mortgages that are currently unavailable because of banks' and building societies' lending criteria.
