Buddhist monk sets himself on fire in protest
China: A Tibetan Buddhist monk who had set himself on fire in an apparent protest against government religious restrictions was then shot by security forces, it was claimed today.
The monk, identified as Tapey, was shot yesterday afternoon in the Tibetan town of Aba in Sichuan province, according to campaign group Free Tibet.
Sri Lanka: Soldiers killed at least nine Tamil Tiger insurgents in a series of fierce clashes in the north-east, the military said today.
