Brown tribute: Soldiers the real heroes, says PM

HAMID Karzai, the president of Afghanistan, put his own problems with insurgents aside yesterday to help Gordon Brown with his domestic problems.

At a joint news conference in Kabul, the Prime Minister was repeatedly asked about threats to his leadership.

Mr Brown also hailed British troops fighting the Taleban as the true heroes of the Olympic year.

The Prime Minister insisted that he was concentrating on Britain's economic difficulties and that he had a "good relationship" with David Miliband, the Foreign Secretary, who many speculate has made a pitch to supplant him as leader.

Mr Karzai then said: "Cabinet ministers plotting is nothing new. We have it in Afghanistan too."

The Prime Minister spent 90 minutes meeting and talking to troops at Camp Bastion – the main British base in Afghanistan – during a stopover as he makes his way to the Olympic Games in Beijing.
