Britain tops DNA log league

THE proportion of British citizens whose details are logged on a DNA database whether or not they have been convicted of a crime is the highest in the world, a report reveals today.

A House of Lords investigation found 7.3 per cent of UK residents have their "genetic fingerprints" entered on a database, compared with 0.5 per cent of US citizens whose details are retained by the FBI.

In its report, a Lords committee calls for the government to abide by a European Court of Human Rights ruling that prevents unlimited retention of DNA samples of people arrested but not charged or convicted.

In Scotland, a review of the retention of DNA is under way after MSPs voted in 2006 against indefinite retention.
