Blow to Inverurie as paper mill closes with loss of 370 jobs
THE economy of the North-east was dealt a hammer blow yesterday with the announcement that Aberdeenshire's last paper mill is to close with the loss of more than 370 jobs.
The International Paper Mill in Inverurie, in the heart of First Minister Alex Salmond's Gordon constituency, is one of the town's biggest employers.
Mr Salmond, who last night met workforce representatives to discuss the closure, said: "This is a big blow to the workforce and the community – 371 skilled jobs is an enormous number in a community of this size."
The mill had been losing more than 1 million a month since at least the beginning of last year.
It was also revealed yesterday that up to 60 jobs could be lost at an Aberdeen-based helicopter maintenance firm, Heli-One. And the Kingsbarn Equestrian Centre, near Falkirk, called in the administrators on Monday.
