Blood leak clue to strokes
ABOUT one in five strokes could be caused by leaky blood vessels in the brain, research out today suggests.
Experts believe they have taken a step forward in understanding how a type of stroke called lacunar stroke occurs.
Lacunar strokes account for one in four ischemic strokes, which are caused by blockages in blood vessels in the brain and make up 83 per cent of all strokes.
It had been thought that lacunar strokes were due to such tiny blockages, but research suggests they could be down to a weakening in brain arteries that allows blood to leak out.
Scientists at the University of Edinburgh said the weakening occurs in the protective lining of the small arteries.
