Blaze memorial
SEVEN firemen who died tackling a warehouse blaze were remembered yesterday at a memorial service marking 35 years since the tragedy.
Around 100 family, friends and colleagues of the men killed in the cash and carry fire in Glasgow in 1972 gathered for the ceremony at the city's Necropolis.
Strathclyde Fire and Rescue chief Brian Sweeney and a number of firefighters' organisations laid wreaths in memory of the men. Six crew died when they entered the burning building in Kilbirnie Street to rescue a seventh colleague trapped by falling debris, who was also killed.
The victims were Andrew Quinn, Alistair Crofts, Iain Bermingham, Allan Finlay, William Hooper, Duncan McMillan and James Rook.
At the service Sweeney paid tribute to the bravery of the men who gave their lives trying to rescue a colleague.
