Blame Labour

Alexander McKay (Letters, 6 November) again blames SNP MPs for bringing down the Callaghan Labour government in 1979. That government brought itself down by, among other things, failing consistently to support Scottish devolution, which was, officially, its policy. SNP MPs surprised the London establishment by keeping their promise to vote as they did. It was Labour that put Margaret Thatcher into power.
