Bit of an off-day for St Andrew

A STRING of St Andrew's Day festivities planned for today have been cancelled because of the snow.

Edinburgh city council said its entire programme of events due to take place in St Andrew Square Gardens had been called off after the snow caused damage to two marquees that had been erected there.

First Minister Alex Salmond and Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Moore both called off events at local schools.

Edinburgh Castle has been closed since Sunday, meaning visitors were forced to miss out on the "free weekend", to commemorate St Andrew's Day.

Edinburgh Zoo was closed yesterday, while a children's writing competition award ceremony at Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World was cancelled.

In football, tonight's First Division matches at Cowdenbeath and Raith Rovers have been postponed due to concerns over travel safety for fans. The Second Division fixture at Dumbarton and the Third Division match at Clyde are also off.
