Bike rental plan wheels a step closer
PLANS to make 800 bicycles available in the city centre and Leith for people to hire have moved a step closer.
The 2.8 million initiative, would initially focus on the trams route, but could later be extended to the New Town, Stockbridge, Marchmont and Merchiston with up to 2500 bikes in operation.
Bikes would be available to rent from secure docking stations, with payments only accepted by credit card, which would deter vandalism as users could be traced.
Councillors have now approved moves to hire a consultant to work up detailed plans for the scheme and possible funding, such as advertising or sponsorship.
